Admission essay writing differs from most other academic writing in a few ways. Your admission essay writing should be in the first person, but at the same time, not too personal.

The directive to not be “too personal” often confuses students. It does not mean to be dishonest or to make things up. In this case, being “too personal” would mean writing the essay like you would an email to a friend or a diary entry. This doesn’t just refer to grammar and structure, but also to content.

For example, it is OK to include information about your emotional development, but it is not OK to be very emotional.

• OK: Changing schools so often was difficult, but over time, I learned how to handle the changes. I was able to make new friends and maintain my GPA despite frequent moves.
• Not OK: People were mean to me because I was new, but I showed them by getting good grades even though no one was helping me.

Of course, it’s OK to feel isolated and to acknowledge that sometimes people are unhelpful or even unkind. However, you want to show your best assets, not describe the worst aspects of others. There is a time and a place for each, and you want to make sure that your admissions essay is about the best in you.
