Good essay topics
Good essay topics
Literally anything can be part of a good essay topic but everything needs a little development. That is, there is no topic that can’t work and there is no topic that doesn’t need work.
As OWL points out, the first step of writing is understanding the assignment. It’s important to read that carefully, it isn’t to know the assignment or have the assignment, but to understand the assignment.
If you are struggling to understand the assignment or come up with a good essay topic, the first step is always to talk to your grader. You might feel embarrassed about that, but it is there job and most professors are happy to answer questions about assignments. They are especially glad to do so before you turn in a shoddy paper and get a poor grade rather than after.
If you are struggling to get comfortable with your topic or to get one at all, consider these questions:
- Is the topic too narrow? In survey classes, a specific topic can seem compelling, but it often won’t suit the class. Professors are often looking to see how well you have understood both specific material and the class as whole. Try to shape your topic so that it has room for both.
- Is the topic too broad? Are you suggesting a topic so general that any skilled ninth grader could write it or even answer question? Your topic may be too broad if it is a Yes or No question. “X is the worst”, “X is the most important”, etc., rarely lead to good papers. They can’t be proven with facts and rely on subjective opinion. That can feel good to write, but it rarely results in a good product.
