Holidays on Campus

For some students travelling home for the holidays is simply not an option. These students may choose to stay on campus (if it remains open) or with people they know instead of going home, for any number of reasons.  These people won’t be with family over the holidays and that is not easy. If you find yourself in this situation we have some suggestions for how to make the holidays merry away from home.

Christmas is a time for sharing. If you are of a religious denomination that celebrates Christmas, every Christian church will undoubtedly have an evening service on December 24^th as well as a Christmas Day service, you should go. Many will also have a special meal organized for Christmas Day in which everyone is welcome to participate.  So get into the spirit! Decorate the college dorm, send Christmas cards and invite people over for some mulled wine and chestnuts.

If you are of another faith or you don’t go in for religious holidays, find out if the college or university has a special event for students and alumni who remain on campus.  Otherwise invite those students and staff remaining on campus to do something with you. Even if you don’t know them well, everyone will appreciate spending time with others at this time of the year.

If you do end up alone then take advantage of the peace and solace in the streets on Christmas Day. Walk through the park and take in your surroundings unfettered by traffic and crowds. With trees and buildings ideally lit against a snowy backdrop, this is one of the most beautiful days to take in your neighbourhood.

There is one last thing that you can do on Christmas day, something that will, regardless of your faith, help you to feel the spirit of Christmas. Visit a homeless shelter or hospital to offer friendship and company to someone who is alone for the holidays.  And for those who know someone who will be away from home during the holidays, extend a hand in friendship.  Happy Holidays!
