How to write an introduction to a research paper.
Introductions for research papers are very like other introductions. In other types of papers, there may be a bit more variety and leeway, but the basic requirements are the same.
If you are struggling with writing an introduction to your research paper, it is always best to stick to the basics. In this case, the basics are
- Convey your thesis, clearly and accurately.
- Provide a map for the major sections of your paper.
- Tell your readers at least one major factor in each section.
The structure of your introduction should follow the structure of your paper. You are helping the reader know what to expect. If you have completed your paper and are struggling to write your introduction, consider writing it as an outline of your paper.
To do this, go through your paper and condense each paragraph or two into a single sentence. By doing this, you should easily have an appropriate introductory paragraph. If you find that your introduction is too long, you can go through and further condense it. However, unless the instructions specifically limit the length of the introduction, do not worry too much about it being “too long”. You don’t want to waste time or just eat up space, but it is OK for your introduction to be a little long.
