How to Write Like a Professional Writer
One of the first skills that a professional writer develops is the ability to set aside, ignore, or eliminate stress and anxiety. That probably sounds a little like saying one of the first things a bird learns is how to fly: How nice for them, what about the rest of us? In some cases, it really is about simply ignoring the anxiety. Sometimes anxiety is helpful, it keeps us on our toes in dangerous or potentially dangerous situations. However, if you are sitting in your dorm typing a paper for history, chances are the paper cannot hurt you but the anxiety can hurt your paper and your productivity.
It sounds silly to say that you can learn to ignore the anxiety, but you can. It may feel even sillier to practice ignoring it, but sometimes it’s as simple as standing up and doing three jumping jacks the second you feel the anxiety rising. Alternatively, you might sing a line from a song, or do some other activity to push the anxiety further to the side.
The next thing is to create a pattern, and stick to it. Your pattern does not have to be like anyone else’s. Nevertheless, once you find out how you work, write it down, and follow it with vigor. Focus hard on the tasks, and channel your anxiety into something other than the paper. The key is to be task oriented. Just as if the only way to clean the counter is to clean the counter, writing a paper is the same, only writing it gets it written.
Another key to writing more quickly is to ignore or set aside your feelings about the class, the professor, your grade, etc. Students often lose hours to having emotional responses to thing like, how stupid the class is, how mean the professor is, how important their grade is, and more. All of it can feel good and it is a great way to procrastinate, but it is no way to get a paper written so that you can get back to the rest of your life and studies.
