I have no idea what I want to do

Say you’ve been given an assignment in a subject you don’t care about, in a class that you never wanted to take. Sometimes it can be worth your time to read some articles about the subject because you may find that there are aspects of the subject you find compelling. Here is one way to brainstorm a topic you have no interest in or knowledge of, do some internet searches for the subject AND something you do like. For example, you can do a Google search of “prairie grasses” and

• If you like taking pictures, include photography in your search. You can learn about the types of cameras and lenses used in plant photography.

• If you are into biology or animal behavior, you might look up animals in order to learn how those that live in prairie grasses use the grass to both hunt prey and hide from predators.

• If you are a business or accounting major, one can investigate businesses that are associated with prairie grasses, selling, maintaining, or eliminating them, and how much business is needed to make a two-person operation profitable.

• The English major can look up poems about prairie grasses, including those by Walt Whitman.

• The historian can look up what states have prairie grasses in their seals or as state flowers and how they chose them.

• The pre-med student can search for information on the medicinal uses of prairie grasses.

• The film student might investigate what types of prairie are most often depicted in films or television.

The point is to relax and explore.

Fortunately, even the things we find least interesting interact with countless other fields, including those that interest or fascinate us.
