Here are some things that are good to know if you are writing a speech or considering purchasing one:

• When speaking English, the average person speaks from 120 to 150 words per minute.

If you are a fast talker, a five-minute speech would need to be 750 words. If you talk slowly, then 600 words might be enough for fill five minutes. In general, it is best for your audience (and that means your grade) to aim for the middle, 135 words per minute. Then you can practice delivering the lines at a pace that achieves your five-minute goal.

• The kind of repetition that inexperienced writers use to pad the length of papers becomes even more painful, and sometimes embarrassing, in a speech.

If you put something that you know is nonsense in a paper, you don’t watch your instructor grade it. If you do that with a speech, you will see the faces of your audience being bored and annoyed, which can really make giving a speech a painful experience.

Don’t worry about making mistakes, everyone does. This advice is just meant to encourage you not to intentionally make bad or lazy decisions. If you are struggling to make your speech long enough, or short enough, talk to your teacher or professor and ask them to look at your speech and make recommendations. This will often soften the grader’s attitude toward your work and it will help you give them what they want. That’s a big reassurance going into a speech.
