“Plagiarism free”

If your head swims when people talk about plagiarism, here is a short review of the two major types of plagiarism. While they are both technically plagiarism for the same reason, they often seem very different to those who are unfamiliar with the rules.

The first type of plagiarism is when you copy all or part of a friend’s work, published article, some paper you find on the internet, or something that you turned in to another professor in a different class. This kind of plagiarism is almost always intentional. A person usually does it when they are so exhausted or stressed that it seems like a good idea because it puts an end to a situation that is upsetting or difficult.

The second kind of plagiarism is when you do not provide a citation for information or a quote. This kind of plagiarism is just as likely to accidental as intentional. Students often feel confused about whether a fact is common knowledge (e.g. “the U.S. has 50 states”) and so does not require a citation.
