People are often shocked that one can purchase poetry, but many of the greatest poets of all time made a living writing poetry for clients who enjoyed poetry but could not write their own. Commissioned works are how most artists earn their livings, and a commissioned poem is not really any different from a commissioned painting of a family member.

For example, many of statues in our national parks are the result of commissioned work or competitions where artists had broad parameters that they needed to meet. The Vietnam Memorial on the National Mall is one such example.

Not to say that we have Maya Lin working for us! Only that commissioned works are a normal part of artists, including writers, making their living, and it is part of the story behind some of humanity’s greatest works. A commissioned work can be profound, beautiful, and intimate, and in many cases is best understood as at least semi-collaborative.
