Professional Writers are like Car Mechanics

Just the other day I was talking with a very nice young man who was ordering a model paper from us. He was concerned that he wouldn't be able to help out his writer enough with the paper, and that the writer might be lost. I asked him what the paper was about; the topic was a pretty standard one given to many first and second-year college students taking English literature classes. What I told him was that he didn't need to worry; I told him that this was like a brake job on a car.

What do I mean by that? I mean that when I take my car into a mechanic to get the brakes done, I don't have to worry that the mechanic will have questions, because it's a typical job, a pretty standard one. That's not to say that the writer won't work hard, just like my mechanic would work hard and do a good job on my brakes if that's what I needed. But it does mean that the nature of the job isn't mysterious.

That's just like my mechanic: he's good, and I know that every time he does a brake job, it will be well done. But I won't expect him to call me with questions. That reassures me.
