Social Media Versus College Homework

It doesn’t have to be war. Really! Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, or gaming can keep you from getting your homework done, but that’s up to you. The point is to not stay on social media while you work, or keep them going simultaneously. Use social media as a reward; don’t keep the Web sites open or notifications turned on while you’re working.

The thing is, many of you already know what to do, but you have trouble getting yourself to do what you need to succeed. But for many students who attend college immediately after high school, college is the first step in professionalization. It’s time to learn to work when you’d rather indulge. Remind yourself that it’s not suffering; it’s simply the work you do to move yourself toward a particular goal, like finishing a term paper. Success at college is somewhat in the grades you receive, but it’s far more in the skills you gain and the options they give you.

One of the greatest skills you’ll learn for yourself is to work through being bored, annoyed, distracted, disinterested, etc. Not only will that skill help you get you want, it will help you see when know when a situation truly isn’t working for you. It’s how you’ll know when a profession, position, or situation, is truly beyond your ability to tolerate. It will not only help you succeed in a wider variety of circumstances, it will help you create a path for yourself that suits you as much as possible in a work world that is necessarily fraught with less than scintillating tasks.
