Student Travel

Travel is an important part of being young.  Whether on a student exchange, or with a group of mates on spring break, travel represents a reprieve from the daily grind. It is a welcome time to relax and enjoy life or to learn new things and discover adventure.  Recognizing this to be the case many travel experiences are geared for and cater to students. Travel agents are also aware of the student propensity for travel and offer great deals between semesters and terms.

Student packages come in a variety of shapes and sizes. From the all-inclusive adventure holiday replete with scuba diving, wind surfing, body boarding, beach games, mountain biking, cliff trekking and volcano trekking (one UK holiday site also promises to cap off each days adventure activities with night time parties) – to the volunteer or working holiday.

At the other end of the spectrum a number of companies offer overseas learning experiences for students wishing to turn their vacation into extracurricular learning. A popular variation on this theme is an international internship. These can be for just about any place in the entire world and some of these jobs can even be quite lucrative. The US peace corps for example offer successful students living expenses as well as pay for the work they do in the country they choose. Although you might think volunteering through your holidays is crazy, many people who have had a great time and came home with some unforgettable memories.

Whichever type of travel you enjoy, the adventure package, third world volunteer work or the plethora of options in between, be sure to ask about student rates when you book flights and accommodation. Most agents and organizers have specials they can offer students even if they’re not advertised. That is true for quite a lot of things actually so it always pays to ask and to carry student identification.
