Summer jobs
Spring is in the air and the March break is over so the time is right to start thinking about what you might want to do for money over the upcoming summer holidays. It’s probably a bit early to start sending applications but it isn’t too early to set some goals. Considering what you want now will set you on the path to organizing your thoughts and paperwork appropriately.
Favorite jobs
Interestingly the most favored summer jobs for students as voted by students are:
• Restaurant jobs • Working with younger kids • School related internships • Retail stores • Cashier • Ice cream vendor • Landscaping/lawn mowing • Golf caddy
And quite a few people specifically mention Subway as a great place to work!
Traditional favorites
Not surprisingly a few tried and true favorites that rank highly are:
• Camp councillors • Tourist attraction staff especially adventure tourism • Amusement park workers • Parks and recreation staff • Summer sports programs staff • Life guard
But the number one ranked favorite occupation for students over the summer was and is, bartending. Go figure! The pros and cons of bartending are probably very much dependant on where you’re lucky enough to land a job. In general it’s fair to say the pros are great tips, meeting people, a relatively simple job, you can play right after work and you still have the days to lax on the beach. The cons: You have to learn how to make a lot of different drinks, the hours are often long and late and worst of all, you have to deal with the drunk people at the end of the night. On the bright side, at least you’re not the bouncer.
