Summer School or Summer Holiday

Most schools operate on semester or term systems which allow students to take the summer months off from school to take extra classes, work, travel, or just relax for a time. For students who are struggling academically the decision about what to do over the summer may not be optional, without extra credits they can’t move forward. Others may have no choice but to work to pay the bills. For these students the choice is made. For those with the luxury of travel and relaxation for some or their entire summer break, there are some great options.

Festivals have become a favorite mini break for students and in response to demand a raft of different festivals have cropped up throughout the US and even the world.

Virginia Beach

The summer festival festivities kick off at Virginia Beach this year with three days of rock and relaxation at Sandstock; the state’s twist on the legendary Woodstock festival of the 60s and it’s all happening from next week with more than 15 bands playing rock music from the past four decades. In addition to awesome music the beach will be covered in laser shows, art and food stalls and giant screens.

Wisconsin

For nearly two weeks Milwaukee will rock the biggest summer festival in the US. Summerfest is reportedly the world’s largest music festival, held along the shores of Lake Michigan. The festival features live music by hundreds of performers including some of music's hottest stars as well as local favorites. The festival area covers 75 acres and includes 11 state of the art stages and the latest music technology, including the Marcus amphitheatre which seats up to 23,000.

Delaware

If Jazz is more your thing, then Delaware is where you want to be this summer.  The Delaware free open air concert has grown to become the largest jazz fest on the East Coast. Over a week some of the best jazz and blues artists in the world perform. Past performances have included Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsallis, David Snaborn, Sonny Rollins and every other jazz musician worth his or her salt. Large video screens simulcast performances.

Ojai, California

Over on the other coast, California is getting down and funky at the end of this summer season with the first ever Ojai festival. The festival features Samite, On Ensemble Taiko and Ancient Grooves in a variety of performances and workshops. The Libbey Bowl north of Los Angeles is hosting this unique experience.

Everybody loves a music festival and there are few better ways to unwind than chilling to your favorite sounds at a really nice location. But, music isn’t everybody’s thing and for others one summer festival just isn’t enough. For these folks there are neighborhood festivals, street parties, and markets galore throughout the entire summer in every part of the US. If that still isn’t enough than there are a number of party hotspots around the globe that cater especially for a younger crowd. Of these Ibiza has perhaps the greatest reputation for catering to young hedonism but not everybody can afford to party with the rich and famous. Backpacking anywhere in the world and even within your own country is a cheap and brilliant way to meet people and inevitably find some good times while on vacation.

You don’t have to go far to find relaxation and respite from the stresses of the school year. You don’t even have to be able to spend more than a few days here and there. There is so much to do over the summer holidays throughout the US, so that even those who have to work or study through the break should be able to make some happy memories.
