What you didn’t know about how cover letters….and how it CAN hurt you

Cover letters may be the last frontier of landing your dream job. You’ve accrued experience related to the job. You meet-or maybe even exceed-their requirements and your resume makes a strong case for your hire. In today’s electronic age, is a cover letter really necessary? YES! In today’s highly competitive hiring markets, cover letters may be even more useful in setting you apart from the dozens or even hundreds of other applicants. The form of cover letters, however, has changed. It’s important to assess the job type and potential expectations of your employer to determine whether a formal, hard copy letter may be preferred over a cover letter positioned in the body of an e-mail with your resume attached.

Here are a few tips of the trade shared by top Human Resources executives:

1) Be concise. Many job seekers fear their cover letter won’t be read. The major challenge in crafting an exceptional cover letter is striking the perfect balance between brevity and enthusiasm. In the very opening line of your letter, let the reader know why you are writer. If you share a mutual connection, name drop early in your communication.

2) Use their language. Study the job description thoroughly. Match the descriptors used for the position you are seeking with previous work experience. You might phrase a task differently but stick to the preferred language of your (hopefully) future employer. Insert your enthusiasm for the job by making it explicitly clear that you are an excellent match for this position.

3) Never use the same letter twice. Employers can spot a recycled or generic cover letter from a mile away. Sending a letter that you’ve used before is not only a waste of your time but it sends a negative message about your commitment to the specific position you’re applying to at the moment. Letters should be tailored for the specific needs and wants of the employer. Whenever possible, you should make personal connections and express unique assets that you would bring to the position.
