Why It's Fine that Writing Matters More to Some than to Others

Hello, lovely readers! I woke up excited to get to this blog today, and that excitement led me to choose today's topic. What do I mean by that? Well, I was excited to write in my blog! I didn't dread it, I didn't think oh no, I have to fill up a whole blank space on my computer -- what I thought was great, I get to share some of my thoughts and ideas in written form! And then I got to thinking, that is exactly why I am a professional writer, and why I work in the academic writing and research business: because not everyone shares my excitement.

In other words, not everyone wants to write, or is a good writer. This is true and it has always been true, and yet colleges and universities expect all of their students, regardless of discipline, to excel at the written word. So, everyone from art majors to engineers is expected to be able to write everything from a term paper to a dissertation. What gives? Are literature majors expected to program a computer before they are allowed to graduate? I don't think so.

So, why not let those people who are excited by writing do the writing? Let students focus upon their own particular strengths, use college to bolster those strengths as it should, really train them for their future professional careers.

Well, we all know this won't happen in the near future. That's one of the many reasons I appreciate the chance to help students with model papers. I get to do something I love, and I get to actually help someone make it through college or university who might otherwise flounder for a reason that makes no sense. Look, I'm not going to work on my car any time soon; accuse me of not being well-rounded, I don't care, but I'm going to seek help from people who do know how to fix cars, and who like to do it. So, this is just my contribution to society.
