In class we discussed steps involved in problem solving.
Discuss an assumption you decided to check this week and describe how it impacted the problem and its resolution.

The problem I chose is planning my meals. It seems like I always either buy too much food or not enough. Worse yet, I buy the food and then run out to get fast food anyway, because I’m not quite sure to do with what I bought. I followed the problem solving process by specifying the problem, analyzing the problem, formulating solutions, evaluating the solutions, and choosing a solution (Cuesta College, 2003).
The problem
I need a way to plan meals that results in good healthy meals that doesn’t take too much time but allows me to plan what I want rather than preprinted menus from someone else.
Analyzing the Problem
I need a plan that is (1) easy, (2) quick, (3) allows personalization, (4) helps with menus and recipes, and (5) teaches me about what my body needs.
Formulating Solutions
I identified a number of possible solutions.
(1) take a class
(2) have my mother help
(3) follow the school lunch menu they put in the paper
(4) find software for my computer
(5) find something online.
Evaluating the Solutions
(1) takes too much time and effort, might be expensive
(2) my mother doesn’t cook the kinds of foods I like to eat and the food is not very healthy
(3) the menu in the paper is full of starch and sugar
(4) all of the software that I have found for my desktop is expensive and requires a lot of data entry
(5) there are many online solutions that look close to what I want, either free or not too much money.
According to Cuesta College (2003), when choosing a solution compatibility with priorities needs to be considered, the amount of risk involved, and the practicality.
As a result of this process I chose to look for an online solution to my problem, and I found an online program and database for $12 a month that will do everything I need it to do. I will even be able to plan meals and recipes for visitors with allergies, print out grocery lists, and work from my pantry. It also helps me calculate how many calories, vitamins, and minerals I need, and take all of this into account when printing a meal plan, grocery list and menu. It seems an excellent solution. I have been working with it a little bit and it seems like it will help plan everything I need so that eventually I will have a better idea of how to do it myself.
